Crown Hill Park spreads across a low rise that offers splendid views of the Front Range, stretching from 14,264-foot Mount Evans to flat-topped, 14,256-foot Longs Peak on the northwest horizon. Covering more than 200 acres, the park is a wild enclave of open space. Expansive Crown Hill Lake, the surrounding grasslands, and the park’s wildlife sanctuary are refuges for birds and animals in the midst of relatively dense suburban development. This lovely 1.9-mile walk follows a paved trail around the lake before venturing into the wildlife area on a boardwalk and gravel path. It finishes by rejoining the paved lake trail. The walk yields great views of the snowy Rockies and allows you to experience nature in the city. As you walk through the wildlife refuge, pay attention to its diverse sounds—the muffled wingbeats of feeding ducks, the wind rustling through dry cottonwood leaves, the drums and horns of a marching band at nearby Wheat Ridge High School, and the distant murmur of traffic on city streets. Special attractions: Crown Hill Lake, fitness trail, wildlife sanctuary, fishing, walking, and jogging.
