This loop trail follows a short section of the South Platte River Greenway, a 10.5-mile route that parallels the South Platte River. Arising on the Continental Divide near Hoosier Pass, the South Platte runs 360 miles through Colorado and drains 28,584 square miles as one of Colorado’s five major rivers. Its snowmelt-fed waters fuel the growth of Denver and its surrounding suburbs, then continue downstream to water the fertile fields and pastures along its broad valley in northeastern Colorado. A 10.5-mile paved trail now runs along its banks between Denver’s north and south city limits. Parks, picnic areas, restrooms, and shelters sit alongside the pathway. Many Denverites use this special trail, including walkers, bicyclists, rollerbladers, anglers, and birders. Wildlife has also returned, and you may see deer, beaver, ducks, geese, and pheasants along the river corridor. Special attractions: South Platte River Greenway, Forney Transportation Museum, Confluence Park, Centennial Park, Gates-Crescent Park, Children’s Museum of Denver, Platte Valley Trolley, and Colorado’s Ocean Journey.
