The third largest canyon in the country is found in this remote area of Montana. Yellowtail Dam is perched between the rugged walls of Bighorn Canyon and has created 71-mile-long Bighorn Lake. Canyon cliffs over 1,000 feet in height rise dramatically above the lake. The recreation area is managed by the National Park Service which operates facilities at the northern district by Fort Smith and the southern district near Lovell, Wyoming. The northern district facilities at Yellowtail Dam are accessible from the Crow Reservation towns along Interstate 90 in Montana, and from Hardin and Pryor. Bighorn Lake has excellent fishing for yellow perch, ling cod, crappie, catfish, carp, and walleye. Anglers can come away from the blueribbon trout fishery on the Bighorn River below Afterbay Dam with plentiful rainbow and brown trout. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Yellowtail Dam Visitor Center and Power Plant, Afterbay Campground and Bighorn Headgate Trail, Ok-A-Beh Marina and Swim Beach, and Om-Ne-A Trail.
