On the crest of a ridge near a place where the Cree Indians frequently crossed the Milk River, a herd of buffalo appears to rest quietly—only they never seem to move! The “herd” is really a group of glacial boulders that from a distance resembles a group of sleeping buffalo. A prehistoric sculptor tried to further the resemblance to bison with crude carvings on the boulder at the Sleeping Buffalo Rock National Historic Monument, near the Sleeping Buffalo Resort turnoff on U.S. Highway 2. An interpretive sign explains that the Sleeping Buffalo boulders were held sacred by the Indians. Long before the white settlers moved into the area, the natives sacrificed possessions to the Sleeping Buffalo Rock. Located in this area now is a hot springs resort as well as an undeveloped campground area by Nelson Reservoir. Not far away is the Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge, Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs, Nelson Reservoir Fishing Access Site, and Huntely School.
