Fort Benton is known as the birthplace of Montana. Steamboats sailed to the “port” of Fort Benton, which is strategically located on the Missouri River. During the westward expansion era, the town became one of three main routes used to reach the wild frontier. Determined homesteaders with belongings piled high in their wagons rolled into the town en route to a new life. Then, at the peak of the Gold Rush era, the steamboats hauled freight and hopeful miners as far as Fort Benton. Today, history brings visitors to the town to explore its museums and walk its historic, quiet streets. Some come to view the steamboats and Lewis and Clark landmarks. Others come to venture onto the mighty Missouri River for a real-life exploration of the plains and breaks along its banks. You will enjoy the town. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Old Fort Park, The Upper Missouri River Visitor Center, Museum of the Upper Missouri, and Museum of the Northern Great Plains and Montana Agricultural Center.
