This small town is named after an Indian word meaning “warm wind.” Every winter in this region, warm winds blow through the area, melting away the winter snow and exposing the grasses below. A winter chinook can increase the temperature some 50 degrees in a few minutes. One of Charlie Russell’s most famous works of art is called Waiting for a Chinook, or The Last of the Five Thousand. It shows a lone, emaciated cow standing in the hard winter weather, waiting for the belated chinook that would expose the grasses needed to keep cattle alive through the winter. Charlie made the sketch one long, cold winter when he was caretaker of a ranch. When the ranch owner wrote to inquire about the condition of his herd, Charlie responded with the telling sketch. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Blaine County Museum and Bear's Paw Battleground.
