On the map, Ennis appears to be one of Montana’s more out-of-the-way towns, but the small village of 800 people has a lot to offer, including the 11 million trout it boasts. Ennis is en route to Yellowstone National Park, if you travel via Hebgen Lake, and only 13 miles from Virginia City, a preserved ghost town. You could miss Ennis if you blink, but the town still manages to provide two interesting wildlife museums, and has a nice city park for a rest stop. Note the sculptures in the yard behind the wrought-iron fence on the south end of town (west side), across from the Valley Western Store. You’ll see metal depictions of bear, horses, and Cowboy Jake, whose history is a curious tale. The town also has a variety of interesting stores, art galleries, fly shops, restaurants, and cowboys. This eTrail provides detailed information on family-friendly things to do. The destinations include: Ennis National Fish Hatchery, Wildlife Museum of the West, Antler Designs and Museum, and Lion's Club Park.
