The Porcupine Creek Trail follows the creek into the Porcupine Elk Preserve. The large, rolling meadows are a winter elk range. When the snow melts, moose and deer may be spotted in the meadows. The hike includes several creek crossings. The trailhead is to the left of the road. Cross the footbridge over Porcupine Creek. The wide trail heads east, parallel to the creek through open sage brush meadows dotted with pine trees. At one mile the trail crosses Porcupine Creek. To avoid getting wet feet, walk back downstream about 50 yards to a solid log crossing. Once over the creek, take the narrow footpath that rejoins the main trail.
