The North Fork Trail leads up to Summit Lake at an elevation of 9,500 feet. It connects with a variety of steep trails near Bear Basin, including the descent along the South Fork of Spanish Creek. The 16-mile North Fork – South Fork hike is a popular overnight backpack trip. This hike takes in the first two miles of the North Fork Trail. It has a gentle elevation gain and follows the beautiful open stands of evergreen trees, all within view of the North Fork. The path climbs gradually but steadily. To the right is the North Fork and towering mountains, including Wilson Peak. At 2 miles, the trail crosses the North Fork. This is a great spot to spend time or picnic. Though the trail continues on the other side of the North Fork, this crossing is a good place to begin retracing your steps. The trail continues along the North Fork to Summit Lake, 6 miles further.
