Blodgett Canyon is named for Joseph Blodgett, a settler who lived along the creek in the late 1 860s. It is considered the most picturesque of the Bitterroot’s many canyons. The vertical cliffs and jagged peaks of Printz Ridge to the north and Romney Ridge to the south rise nearly 4,000 feet from the canyon floor. Blodgett Creek snakes 1 9 miles through the deep, glacially carved canyon under stands of ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and fir. The creek alternates between wide, clear pools and turbulent whitewater cascades. The trail follows an easy elevation grade and is well-maintained. It winds nearly 20 miles up the canyon and into Idaho over Blodgett Pass. This hike includes the first 3.5 miles of the trail to a waterfall.
