The Willoughby Environmental Education Area lies in the foothills of the low and rounded Sapphire Mountains, located on the opposite side of the valley from the tall, jagged Bitterroot Mountains. The 40-acre reserve has an interpretive trail that passes through three distinct habitats: dry sagebrush on a plateau with wildflowers; timbered slopes with ponderosa pines; and a riparian valley bottom with an intermittent stream, cottonwoods, and apple trees. An interpretive brochure describes how the trees, rocks, soils, streams, animals, insects, weeds, fire, people, and surrounding landscape play a roll in this ecosystem. The brochure is available at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge in Stevensville and the Stevensville Ranger Station.
