The Bitterroot Mountains form a jagged ridge along the Montana- Idaho border. Lolo Pass straddles the ridge along the state line at 5,235 feet. The pass was an ancient Native American travel corridor with intersecting east, west, north, and south routes. Packer Meadows is a pristine meadow rimmed with Engelmann spruce and sub-alpine fir that sits atop the pass. Glade (Pack) Creek meanders through the lush meadow. Thirty-five members of the Lewis and Clark expedition camped here in September, 1 805. On their return journey in June, 1 806, they passed through the meadow again en route to Lolo Hot Springs. The meadow has remained virtually unaltered over the last 200 years. This hike forms a loop through the lower west end of the meadow. The historic area is also a popular winter recreation site for nordic skiers, snowshoers, and snowmobilers.
