The Crazy Canyon Trail crosses the southwest slope of University Mountain, connecting the Pattee Canyon Recreation Area with Hellgate Canyon and the University of Montana. This hike begins in Pattee Canyon on the east side of Missoula and follows an unpaved, vehicle-restricted road that was once used for logging. The trail leads through Crazy Canyon in the Lolo National Forest to the summit of Mount Sentinel. From the 5,1 58-foot peak towering above the university, the vistas span from Missoula Valley to the Bitterroot Mountains and Frenchtown, and from Hellgate Canyon to the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness. For a one-way, 4.7-mile hike, leave a shuttle car by the university.
