Kelly Island is formed at the confluence of the Bitterroot and Clark Fork Rivers on the west end of Missoula. The 650-acre undeveloped island actually encompasses one large island and eight smaller islands that are divided by springs, backwater sloughs, and channels of the Clark Fork River. The protected river corridor is a mix of cottonwood bottoms, lush meadows, and old-growth ponderosa pines. The wetland oasis has large populations of waterfowl and wildlife. Great blue herons, Canada geese, great horned owls, and red-tailed hawks commonly nest on the island. Lewis’ woodpeckers, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and beaver may also be spotted.
