Greenough Park has hiking paths that wind along Rattlesnake Creek as it flows through this 42-acre city park at the mouth of the Rattlesnake Valley. The park has mature ponderosa pines, spruce, cottonwoods, maples, and lush riparian vegetation along Rattlesnake Creek. Greenough Park, prime bird habitat, was donated to the city of Missoula in 1 902 by the Greenough Family. The Maclay Flat Trail is a wide, level interpretive trail that loops through a riparian forest rich with aspen, cottonwood, ponderosa pine trees and meadows. There are sixteen information sites that describe the geology, river system, vegetation and wildlife in the area. The trail borders the Bitterroot River and the Big Flat Irrigation Ditch on the return. The irrigation ditch is used by farms and ranches through Big Flat before emptying into the Clark Fork River. Benches and picnic tables are available along this wheelchair accessible trail.
