The headwaters of Rattlesnake Creek form at McLeod Peak in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness. The creek flows south through the heart of the wilderness and recreation area, cascading down Rattlesnake Valley before joining the Clark Fork River between the Madison Street Bridge and the Van Buren Street Bridge. This hike follows Rattlesnake Creek in the upper end of the valley on a near-level trail, meandering through ponderosa pines and riparian habitat. At its north end, the trail connects with the main Rattlesnake corridor (Hike 3), providing access to the extensive trail system in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area.
