Sawmill Gulch and Curry Gulch are fertile mountain drainages in the southwest corner of the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. The drainages lie within the 880-acre Sawmill-Curry Trail System. The network of trails, dating back to the 1 880s, has been made by prospectors, settlers, and livestock. Additional logging roads were developed in the 1 960s and 1 970s, forming a mosaic of trails that cross through the area. This hike leads to Curry Cabin, a multi-room log cabin built in the late 1 800s by Jacob Curry. At the site are two additional log structures— an earth-covered root cellar and an old shed. Several routes can be taken to reach Curry Cabin. This hike begins in the main Rattlesnake corridor and follows the most direct route up two spring-fed canyons—Spring Gulch and Curry Gulch.
