The cool, naturally carbonated waters that give Colorado Springs its name are located here in Manitou Springs. These natural springs attracted many of the area’s steady visitors: the Indian tribes of the Rockies, trappers and traders passing through, tuberculin patients from the East, and wealthy tourists whose stays prompted the building of the elegant spas and hotels for which the town was once famous. Briefly known as La Font, this town at the entrance to Ute Pass became simply Manitou, the name the Algonquin Indian’s gave to the Great Spirit. Springs was not added to its name until 1935. Longfellow refers to Manitou in his epic poem Hiawatha, and many speculate that it was the poet’s reference that inspired the town’s name. Special attractions: Charming and historic main street, artists colony, natural mineral springs, varied architecture.
