Part of the El Paso County park system, the Bear Creek Nature Center combines interactive, indoor nature displays with about 2 miles of self-guided, outdoor trails. The park trails are open from sunrise to sunset. The center’s easiest and shortest trail is Songbird Trail, with 0.1 miles of wooden boardwalk that goes through the thickest part of the woods. Watch for poison ivy. Tiny children, people with disabilities, and those who want a quick, easy walk will especially enjoy this appealing, shaded path under the vine-covered cottonwoods. When you have finished Songbird Trail, you might want to try the other trails within the 150-acre Bear Creek Nature Center. These three trails are short, interesting, and fairly easy, but they are not wheelchair accessible. Special attractions: Wooden boardwalk, songbirds, peaceful setting. Attention birders: More than 150 bird species have been identified within this park, from the common magpie, flicker, and rufous-sided towhee, to the less easily spotted great horned owl and peregrine falcon.
