Landscape engineer, Edmond C. Van Diest, a close friend of General Palmer, had designed most of the city’s parks. So when Palmer announced that this park was to be the crowning glory of his park development plans, Van Diest outdid himself. He filled the space with charming gardens, winding walks, waterfalls, and rustic bridges crossing picturesque ponds. Among the park’s plantings was one tree of every kind known to grow in Colorado. The park opened on November 1907. Then, as now, the breezes carried the smell of pine and junipers, and the trees welcomed the finches, orioles, jays, and blue buntings that brought color and song to the park. Special attractions: Ponds and ducks, gardens, original Van Briggle pottery building.
