Elephanthead Mountain, in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, rises along the northern edge of the Absaroka Range on the outskirts of Livingston. The sheer limestone cliffs at the southern head of the mountain are dramatic. There are several accesses to Elephanthead Mountain. This trail strenuously climbs along the eastern base of the mountain beneath the limestone walls. It follows the watercourse of Mission Creek from the mouth of the canyon to a saddle past its headwaters. (Mission Creek was the infamous location where John Bozeman was killed by the Blackfoot Indians.) En route, the trail passes through dense forest, grassy streamside meadows, and expansive alpine tundra with scenic panoramas in every direction. From the 8,900-foot ridge at the head of the canyon are views into Canyon Creek Canyon, Blacktail Creek Canyon, and across three layers of ridges and plateaus in the Boulder River Canyon. The views are worth the steep climb.
