The West Fork of the Stillwater River forms on the southeast slope of Lake Mountain above Lake Plateau at an elevation over 10,000 feet. The river flows 28 miles down the scenic canyon and empties into the Stillwater River near Nye. The West Fork Stillwater Trail parallels the river for 16 miles in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, then climbs to a series of lakes on the Lake Plateau, between the main Stillwater drainage and the Boulder drainage. This hike follows the lower three miles, all within the wilderness. The trail meanders through a mix of forests and meadows while staying close to the river on an easy grade. Throughout the hike are spectacular vistas. Across the Lake Plateau, connecting trails lead into the East Fork Boulder River drainage (Hike 91 ).
