This trail accesses a remote and beautiful alpine basin at the foot of Scarlet Mountain’s massive walls. This trail runs above the main fork of Hoadley Creek, crossing a number of mossy rivulets. The trail then makes its way into a gladed forest of enormous subalpine fir, underlain by a dense carpet of beargrass. The trail bends around to the north, beneath the foot of the imposing eastern facade of Scarlet Mountain, as the forest becomes progressively more open. Ultimately, the trees give way to the rolling alpine meadows of the Grizzly Basin, and the trail peters out amid the lush greenery. From this point, the route takes an uphill tack, angling away from the cliffs. The trail reappears again just before crossing the stream at the edge of the meadows and then takes a sharp eastward bend as it ascends the hillside opposite the cliffs. Upon reaching the ridgeline, the trail turns northwest again, climbing moderately along the crest of the ridge.
