This major trunk trail follows Youngs Creek, a small river that drains the entire southwestern corner of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The trail was originally blazed by tribes of Salish and Blackfoot Indians, who used the route to access the basin of the Flathead River’s south fork. Though mostly a forest trek, there are meadows scattered along the route and occasional mountain views. All stream fords are challenging ones, and should not be attempted by inexperienced travelers before midsummer. Even during late summer, the crossings are challenging and may be rendered impassable by heavy rains. The Youngs Creek valley receives heavy hunting pressure starting in mid-September, and hikers may wish to avoid it during the autumn.
