This Jewel Basin Trail offers the only long route for backpackers who are trying to get away from the crowds that throng the shorter trails. It passes Birch, Squaw, and Crater lakes on its way to the Big Hawk Lakes, offering a number of possibilities for an overnight stay. The trail is always in good condition and is closed to horse and mountain bike traffic. From the Noisy Creek trailhead, there are two possible routes. The fastest way is to follow the closed dirt road on the south side of the parking lot. This road works its way around to the west, crossing over the far side of a nameless ridge before turning south and west to reach a high saddle.
