The Hall Lake Trail provides a trip toward the crest of the Swan Range, to a high subalpine lake known for its fishing potential. From the trailhead, the route runs westward across the lowlands of the Swan Valley, passing among noble fir and paper birch on its way to the Swan Range. After a gradual climb of 1.5 miles, the trail reaches the mountains and passes into the wooded Groom Creek canyon. The trail runs upstream for a short distance before crossing the creek and turning northwest. It climbs steadily through an open forest of Douglas fir; the slopes above the trail were deliberately burned in 1998 to improve elk winter range. A backward glance now reveals the tall summit of ConKelley Mountain. Upon reaching the end of the ridge, the trail climbs into the Hall Creek drainage.
