This trail provides an easy stroll through forested bottomland to reach a spectacular waterfall on Morrell Creek. The route is especially popular with families and can also be enjoyed by beginner and out-of-shape hikers. Due to the large numbers of visitors to this area in summer months, it is the wrong choice for solitude seekers. The best time to view the falls is early summer, when snowmelt causes enormous quantities of water to thunder over the lip. The trail begins by following an old roadbed across a small stream and then striking northward through the lodgepole pine. The trail is wide and well beaten as it makes its way through the level forest. Lodgepole pines are dependent on fires and other disturbances to reproduce. The heat of a forest fire melts the resin that seals the cones shut, allowing the seeds inside to be released after the fire, even if the tree bearing them dies in the blaze.
