A day hike along the northwest shore of Lake McDonald from the Fish Creek Campground to the head of the lake. This relatively obscure and lightly traveled trail follows the roadless northwestern shore of Lake McDonald. Most of the trail is within forest that burned in a hot fire in 2003, with frequent views through the charred snags of the surrounding mountain scenery. Hikers seeking a shorter trip can start at the south end and visit Rocky Point (1.6 miles round-trip), or start from the north end of the trail and hike to the Lake McDonald backcountry camp (4.4 miles round-trip). After crossing a bridge over Fern Creek, the trail runs through a young forest of lodgepole pine underlain by bear grass.
