This is a scenic and historical hike near the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness to the site of a tragic forest fire accident. After arriving at Meriwether Picnic Area by boat, walk up the gulch for several hundred yards to the Vista Point turnoff.Turn left (north) for Vista Point. Mann Gulch Trail starts 100 feet before the metal railings that mark Vista Point. Turn right, uphill, and northeast. A mile of switchbacks now lies between you and Mann Gulch. These trails are well worn and easy to follow, but stay on the designated route instead of cutting the switchbacks. Several points during the climb offer excellent views of the canyon below. Once you reach the top, the trail fades away, but the view does not.Willow Peak is east up the ridge, and Beartooth Mountain is across the river. Burned and fallen trees lie parallel on the opposite slope. Rockslides and thick grasses cover the steep slope of Mann Gulch.
