A strenuous but ultra-scenic backpacking trek through the heart of the AnacondaPintler Wilderness. The Anaconda-Pintler is one of Montana’s smaller wilderness areas but also one of the most spectacular. This route makes a convenient circuit through the center of this fairly accessible wild area. It’s a great place for hikers from Butte, Missoula, or Helena to spend a three-day weekend. Start off down Falls Fork Trail 29.The first 5 miles of trail to Johnson Lake gradually ascend through a mature forest with some burned sections between the Edith Lake Trail and the lake. At 3 miles you’ll reach the junction with Hiline Trail toward Edith Lake to your left. Stay on Trail 29. Johnson Lake is, perhaps unfortunately, in a logical place to camp for most routes using this trailhead.
