At 65,000 acres, Allegany State Park is the largest state park in New York. Considering that the park borders Pennsylvania’s Alle gheny National Forest, which covers more than 500,000 acres, this area is truly a vast wilderness. This wilderness park is unique for two reasons: first, unlike the Adirondacks and Catskills, it is a state park, not a state forest; and second, the area was unglaciated. Glacial influences on the landscape are evident across all of New York except, for all practical purposes, within the boundaries of this park. Untouched by Ice Age glaciers, the landscape, topography, and geology of Allegany State Park are quite different from what most New Yorkers are used to. This unglaciated area, called the Salamanca Reentrant, consists of terrain that is more angular and rugged than the deeply gouged troughs and subdued terrain found in the rest of the state. Established in 1921 to provide the western half of New York with its own “wilderness playground,” the park is a great destination for campers wishing to vary their wilderness experiences in New York.
