The Finger Lakes region was shaped by multiple periods of glaciation during the Ice Age. Indeed, the entire state of New York, except in the region of Allegany State Park, bears the scars and deposits of huge sheets of ice. The most striking of the glacial effects, other than the region’s lakes, are the dramatic gorges that formed as the last sheets of ice receded from the region. Long swaths through hillsides were eroded further as brooks and streams cut away the softer sedimentary rock. These gorges can be seen throughout the region, but no state park other than Stony Brook allows you to camp along the water’s edge. Although Stony Brook’s camping areas are not situated within the most dramatic parts of the gorge, you can choose among plenty of scenic brook-side sites.
