Many people’s childhood memories of the Adirondacks revolve around the long and narrow Lake George. Its proximity to Albany, New York City, and even Boston (about 200 miles away) has made it an extremely popular summer getaway. Children’s summer camps, rental cottages, lodges, and many budget motels line the lake’s shores, and the water itself delights boaters of all stripes. Thirty-two miles long and 3 miles wide at its widest point, Lake George stretches through the southwestern Adirondacks like a wisp of smoke. And islands, some acres-large and others little more than rocks sprouting a few trees, pop up across the water. You could camp along the shores at Roger’s Rock or Hearthstone Point, but with almost 400 prime campsites to choose from on the lake’s roughly 150 islands, why bother?
