When visitors come to the Adirondacks, they are usually impressed with the sheer number of rugged hiking trails that crisscross the wilderness. One of the other ways to explore this vast wilderness—which often escapes first-time visitors—is the numerous canoe routes. Interconnected rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes provide innumerable miles of adventure; and when connected by short portages, the distances canoes can travel are truly vast. Although the rivers and rapids in the Adirondacks should only be attempted by experienced boaters or with an outfitter, the placid lakes and ponds are within grasp of most novice boaters. Indeed, one of the more easily navigable canoe trips in the western Adirondacks is along the Fulton Chain of Lakes. Roughly 20 miles long, part of this chain contains Seventh and Eighth Lakes—the second and third largest as well as the least developed. Nestled between these two lakes is Eighth Lake Campground.
