As the Ausable River empties into Lake Champlain (the 100-plus-mile-long sliver of water that forms the northeastern border between New York and Vermont), it creates a fertile delta. Birds, and in turn birders, flock to these wetlands every spring and summer. The state has designated it the Ausable Marsh Wildlife Management Area, and with a keen eye and a good set of binoculars, you can spot ospreys, mergansers, teals, and goldeneyes within the 12 distinct ecological communities. Perhaps you will even spy a tent camper or two—because down the road, where the north branch of the Ausable meets the shores of Champlain, Ausable Point Campground houses 123 excellent campsites.
