Most day-trippers come to Moreau Lake for the main attraction—a large, sandy beach in a region where such things are in short supply. A few picnickers and sunbathers even venture out and around the park’s Mud Pond to enjoy a nature trail. But stay a night or more and you’ll get a chance to know a third body of water in the park—the Hudson River. Carving a winding path through the park’s northeast corner, the river passes through breathtaking scenery and by several primitive boat-in campsites. Moreau Lake State Park is technically part of the Adirondack foothills, the “blue line” on maps that marks the border of the Adirondack Park. The latter is less than 2 miles to the north, but Moreau is a distinct park on its own, and its clear waters, green woods, and pleasant camping loops will surely satisfy campers looking for an easily accessible bit of nature.
