In the history-rich Mohawk Valley, Delta Lake has quite a story of its own. It was once a natural lake, but when Ice Age glaciers covered the area and then retreated, it dried up. On the site of the ancient lake bed, the village of Delta was established and thrived, due in large part to its location on the Black River Canal, which was dug in the 1850s to connect the city of Rome to the Erie Canal. As the area grew, the need for a reservoir outweighed the need for a town. In 1912, the residents of Delta were relocated and the Mohawk River was dammed. A large body of water made a homecoming to the area after being gone for thousands of years, and now it had a name—Delta Lake. Fifty years passed before the state decided to create a park and take advantage of the recreational opportunities the reservoir offers. Go for a visit to Delta Lake State Park when the water level is low and, it is rumored, you may see rooftops of the flooded homes.
