A short, easy loop in a peaceful, wooded stream valley, not far from Newark, Delaware. You can get totally lost in Middle Run Natural Area. In an area as densely populated as middle New Castle County, this is a real blessing. You can also get lost on the many informal side trails created by mountain bikers; inconsistent trail signage is another challenge. These inconveniences are more than offset by the scenic, wild surroundings. The terrain is varied, the woods are deep, and the trail system devised to make maximum use of the acreage. The paths visit tall poplar stands and pass through quarter-mile-wide fields. There is a quiet segment where the trail hugs the high side of a steep, narrow gorge. Other than one bridgeless stream crossing and a few steep hills, the Lenape South route is a casual leg-stretcher. Special considerations: You might find yourself crossing Middle Run at a bridgeless crossing. The creek is only 20 feet wide and several inches deep.
