A long but easy hike through the woods around Delaware’s largest freshwater pond. Delaware’s largest freshwater pond, Lums Pond, was created in the early 1800s when St. Georges Creek was impounded to supply water for the locks of the new Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Today the pond covers 200 acres and is surrounded by oak forests, wetlands, and beaches. Swamp Forest Trail circles the entire pond, following the shoreline and occasionally drifting from the water’s edge into the forest and along the edges of a wooded swamp. Special considerations: Hunting is permitted in the park; check with the park office for season information.
