In Lower Paugussett State Forest, on the west shore of Lake Zoar, this blue-blazed loop applauds lake and woods, with a side trip to a waterfall. Round the rock barrier and follow the blazes north along a closed woods road, passing through the hemlock–hardwood forest. Avoid the shoreline here; it is private property. With the exception of side paths branching away to skirt a fallen tree or a badly eroded spot, the woods road guides travelers the first 0.25 mile, crossing a wooded flat above the steep treed slope to sparkling Lake Zoar. Maple-leaved viburnum, fern, and sassafras decorate the understory. The grade becomes pathlike, ascending the steep lakeside slope. By 0.5mile, descend toward the water. Tulip poplar appear among the hemlock and birch. Within striking distance of shore, find cross-lake views of Jackson Cove Recreation Area as well as north–south views of this long impoundment of the Housatonic River.
