This sampling of the Mattatuck Trail travels an isolated corner of the White Memorial Foundation property, visiting five ponds of unique personality. Snuggled in the Berkshire foothills of northwest Connecticut, this 4,000-acre private reserve offers the public some 35 miles of trail and woods road to explore. Devoted to conservation, education, research, and suitable recreation within a natural arena, the foundation has set aside 600 acres as a “natural area,” where the land and habitats can change and prosper free from intervention. Ten acres of old-growth forest, a premier boardwalk, Bantam Lake and River, mixed woods, marsh, and ponds further endorse the area. Special attractions: Bird and wildlife sightings, spring and summer wildflowers, fall foliage, museum/nature center at main area of foundation property.
