Three short hikes present the reserve’s diversity, visiting lakeshore, swamp, and hilltop. Snuggled in the Berkshire foothills of northwest Connecticut, this 4,000-acre private reserve offers the public some 35 miles of trail and woods road to explore. Devoted to conservation, education, research, and suitable recreation within a natural arena, the foundation has set aside 600 acres as a “natural area,” where the land and habitats can change and prosper free from intervention. Ten acres of old-growth forest, a premier boardwalk, Bantam Lake and River, mixed woods, marsh, and ponds further endorse the area. Special attractions: Boardwalks and observation platforms, bird and wildlife sightings, spring and summer wildflowers, old-growth trees, fall foliage, museum/nature center.
