Kickapoo State Pa rk is a great place to play. Sure, the campsites are spacious, tent campers can use the shower house, and there’s a terrific little restaurant, but the prime attraction is recreation. The park offers scenic (and even rugged) hiking and mountain biking, excellent fishing, scuba diving, and the opportunity to canoe Illinois’ only National Scenic River. You could come here for a quiet, do-nothing weekend—but why? Kickapoo owes its diverse recreation and terrain to the fact that these lands were once open strip mines. The state of Illinois purchased them in 1939, and over the years nature has transformed them into deep, clear ponds, steep hills, and wooded ravines. Twenty-two ponds and lakes cover more than 220 of Kickapoo’s 2,842 acres, providing ample space for lots to do.
