This hike traverses diverse habitat that includes pine flatwoods and cypress swamps. Near the beginning of the western end, between Memery Island and State Road 12, the trail passes through a remarkable area of pitcher plant savannas. An extract of the saw palmetto berry is thought by some to promote good health. A distance of 35 miles, this is one of the most remote trails in Florida. A map and compass are mandatory. Of the two forest trails here, this is the drier. After heavy rains, you shouldn’t find water much deeper than your ankles in even the wettest parts. The trail first enters a wet savanna, home to numerous orchids and other wildflowers, and then passes through pines and cypress.
