The major characteristic of this unusual park is the huge natural depression arranged in two long fingers that run west to east. Called a steephead ravine, it covers more than eighty acres and ranges between 70 and 120 feet in depth. It was formed over the years through erosion, by water flowing from beneath the ground on the western bank of the St. Johns River. The 153.6-acre park is divided into two sections: The huge ravine lavishly filled with flowers, especially azaleas and camellias, and the natural swampland adjoining the St. Johns, which is home to bobcats, foxes, opossums, and raccoons.
