Although just a few miles outside of Jacksonville, the 20,885-acre Jennings State Forest is a surprisingly rich landscape with many different types of plants and animals. Several rare plants such as Bartram’s Ixia and the St. Johns Susan grow in these woods. Just about every type of natural community is located here: slope forests, sandhills, flatwoods, dome swamps, and blackwater streams. Hawks, white-tailed deer, river otters, turkeys, alligators, and raccoons are all common residents. Miles of roads and Green tree frogs are found not only in Florida but in many states throughout the Southeast.
