Although less than a mile, the Anhinga Trail is probably the park’s singular most popular walk. It starts as a paved trail that’s actually part of the old highway built in 1916 from Homestead to Flamingo. The narrow ribbon of asphalt leads to a system of boardwalks that loop over a saw grass prairie. They offer superb views of Taylor Slough (pronounced “slew”), one of the best places for wildlife in the park. Polarized sunglasses help in sighting the prehistoric-looking garfish with their narrow streamlined bodies and long snouts. Compared to a garfish, a gator looks positively pleasant. The fish and all the animal life are concentrated in what are actually deep borrow pits created when soil was dug out for road and trail construction. Man’s positive influence, for once.
