You’ll feel truly humbled standing next to a 1,000-year-old oak tree on the Big Oak Trail, one of Highlands Hammock State Park’s most popular nature trails. The old tree’s gnarled and twisted girth is an incredible 37.5 feet; you’ll never worry about being overweight again. Huge, ancient oaks are only one of the many attractions at this 5,540-acre park. Local citizens, concerned about this hammock turning into farmland, purchased the property in the early 1930s to protect it. Considering the tremendous development close to the park these days, visitors will readily appreciate the foresight of these people as they walk any of the nine different nature trails that explore the virgin forest hammock. Many of the trails, which are amazingly diverse and specialized, are wheelchair accessible.
