The 31,000-acre Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area borders 19 miles of the St. Johns River. Its landscape is a showcase of how plant communities are shaped by the alternating cycles of flood and fire that create a patchwork of swamps, marshes, hammocks, and pine flatwoods. Pronounced tos-uh-HATCH-ee, the word is actually a simplification of the Indian term Tootoosahatchee, meaning either “chicken creek” or “fowl creek.” You’ll be seeing some of that creek on the hike here, an excellent trail for overnight backpacking trips. Tosohatchee has almost 60 miles of hiking trails, including a through section of the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST). The featured hike is an out-and-back on the FNST to a primitive campsite.
