The Sunset Rock hike is one of four loop trails in this book that utilize a portion of the Pine Mountain Trail in Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park. The Sunset Rock route, at 11.4 miles, is the longest of the Pine Mountain Trail loop hikes. The loop can be hiked either direction, but we follow it here headed clockwise from the parking area. Begin at the Rocky Point trailhead on the blue-blazed Pine Mountain Trail, near mile 18, and descend gradually southwest to the Sparks Creek Campsite. About 0.5 mile past the campsite, the Pine Mountain Trail intersects with the white-blazed Boottop Trail. Bear left and follow the blue blazes of the Pine Mountain Trail another 2 miles, climbing gradually until you reach a clearing with some facilities known as Dowdell Knob.
